There’s a lot of inspiration to be had in Octopath Traveler but you’re gonna have to pick and choose. So I would recommend picking and choosing the parts that you want to borrow from Octopath.ĭo you want to combine 2D sprites with a 3D environment? Not too hard, there’s a technique called “sprite billboards” that lets you do that.ĭo you want to create a 16-bit style RPG with a sprawling map and a bunch of quests? You can get there a lot quicker with tools like RPG Maker, which lets you focus on content creation.ĭo you want to design your own turn-based battle system with elemental weaknesses? That can be a lot of fun, and there are plenty of tutorials for creating turn-based RPGs in Unity. And then there’s all of the effort it takes to balance a game-countless hours and days spent tweaking numbers in spreadsheets to try and make the characters, equipment, and monsters make sense. Something as simple as a forest path or a basic sidequest can involve a ton of work. I think a lot of people underestimate how much content creation is involved in making an RPG. It’s just such a damn big game, with a lot going on-there’s all the 3D environments, the 2D art, and then a full orchestra. Obviously making a game much like Octopath Traveler is out of reach for an indie developer.
